The Tractor in the Sandbox

By: Meir Shalev illustrations: Yossi Abulafia

When a hardworking tractor retires after years of working in the fields, it is dismissed from all its duties in the village. Luckily Uncle Aaron, the old pioneer and the tractor's loyal partner, helps him get back on the road – this time with a new mission.

“Respect your elder” (Leviticus, 19:32)

The red tractor coughs, Uncle Aaron gets tired, and the young tractor-driver who arrives in the village calls them names and asks to have them replaced with newer equipment. In a round-about and sensitive fashion, this story touches upon growing old, the beauty of old age and life experience, and the contribution every person – young or old – can make to the community.

“He who works the land shall have plenty of bread” (Proverbs, 28:19)

Growing our food requires a collaboration with nature. Farmers pay attention to seasons, rain, sunshine and animals, and are very familiar with the earth.

The pioneers who immigrated to Eretz Israel sought to tie themselves to this earth. They chose to live in rural areas and practice agriculture. The first settlers wanted to renew Jewish life in this country by familiarizing themselves with nature and the land. By doing so they followed one of their key values – working the soil – for “He who works the land shall have plenty of bread” (Proverbs, 28:19).
