The Teeny-Tiny Kingdom

By: Etgar Keret illustrations: Tami Bezaleli

It's great to be king, the ruler of a small kingdom, to issue royal decrees, and be cheered and applauded. But sometimes, monarchy is a lonely affair, and even kings could use true friends. This is a poetic, multi-layered tale about friendship, being considerate, and making choices in life.

Age Group: KINDERGARTEN

“Acquire a friend for yourself” (Ethics of the Fathers, 1:6)

We interact with our peers from preschool to old age, and engage in friendships our entire lives. Parents often watch their children make their first steps in society in kindergarten, and wonder whether and how they should guide them in their social interactions. This story will give you the opportunity to discuss true friendship and giving with your child.

In Jewish tradition, many sources underscore the importance of having good friends, their positive impact on our lives, and the effort required to sustain friendships, which never goes unrewarded. In order to have true, deep friendships, we must also learn to make concessions, be considerate, and be attentive to the needs of others.
