The Speed of Sound

By: Erez Hadad Illustrations: Menachem Halberstadt

Chico the rabbit says something insulting to his friend Pilchas the elephant. The minute the words are out of his mouth, Chico wishes he could take them back. He chases after them, hoping to stop them before they reach his friend’s ears. But can a word that’s already been spoken really be stopped? And what will happen to their friendship if the words aren’t caught in time? A story about friendship and the power of words.

Age Group: Second Grade

Chico the rabbit said some hurtful things when he was angry and insulted his dear friend Pilchas. He feels guilt and remorse, tries to take back what he had said, and in doing so discovers the power of words.
“The tongue is compared to an arrow, and why? … [For] the arrow, once shot and even if the shooter regrets it, cannot be returned.”
(Midrash Tehillim 120)

Chico only makes amends successfully when he takes responsibility for what he had said and asks for forgiveness from the bottom of his heart. In life, as in this book – good friends hurt one another and are hurt by one another, but true forgiveness and reconciliation can make their friendship stronger.
