A Cat is Not a Dog!

By: Shoshana Karbasi illustrations: Rachel Stoleru-Haim

A boy wants a dog but is given a cat instead. The cat doesn’t bark or sit when commanded or fetch a ball. Because a cat is not a dog. But… could the cat be the right pet for the boy anyway? An amusing story about expectations and disappointments, and about how something we don’t want can turn out to be the best thing for us.

Age Group: Daycare (2-3)

The protagonist in this book wanted a dog, but received a cat instead. What happens when we get something that wasn’t quite what we wanted? Sometimes we experience disappointment or anger, and other times we learn to like what we previously did not. At the very moment when the boy in this book was the most disappointed and frustrated that he got a cat and not a dog, the cat “gave him a licking, as sweet as a kiss”, which made him see the positive aspects in his new pet, and discover that disappointment can sometimes turn into true love.

“And a man should accustom his mouth to say: ‘This too is for good’”
