Trees Wait for Rain

By: Rakefet Ziv-Li illustrations: Noa Mishkin

It’s so wonderful to visit Saba in Tel Aviv and, when the weather cooperates, to go to the beach with him in the winter. The grandfather and grandson listen to the weather forecast and to an old melody that conjures up sweet childhood memories from far away. The song is sung in Ladino, the language of Saba’s childhood.

Age Group: SECOND GRADE

A tune can transport us to a single moment in time and make us nostalgic. In this book, the young grandchild visiting his beloved grandfather listens to him and his friends sing in Ladino, and for just a moment, a thin line connects the Tel Aviv beach to a childhood spent in a faraway country, a child to his grandfather, and one generation to another.

Deep within us are voices and memories, many sights we have already forgotten, wondrous books, and melodies.
