“A good friend” (Ethics of the Fathers, 2:9)
Good friends are not always those who are most similar to us, or with whom we see eye to eye. Some friends are like us, while others complement us. The cat in this story could not bite into the carrot offered to him at the rabbit’s house for lack of sharp teeth. The rabbit’s tongue was not long enough to lick the cream, nor did he like the taste of it. But despite their differences, the two find a way to remain friends, and take an enjoyable trip together.
