HowtoHealaBrokenWing

By: Bob Graham illustrations: Bob Graham

While the people around him rush from place to place, one little boy notices a bird with a broken wing. A tender tale, filled with hopefulness, “How to Heal a Broken Wing” shows how to treat living creatures with respect, empathy, and compassion through the eyes and deeds of a child.

"Tsa'arBa'aleiHayim" (Compassion for animals)

The phrase “compassion for animals” teaches us that we must not injure the creatures that live in our midst or those that we own, or cause them any needless suffering. It means that we must treat them with respect and sensitivity. Many of the teachings of Jewish tradition forbid any mistreatment of animals, while others offer us guidance on how to treat them with respect—for example, the commandment to feed our animals before we feed ourselves. The story “How to Heal a Broken Wing” gives new meaning to the phrase “compassion for animals”and shows that we have the power to help creatures who are in trouble.

Children’s capacities for empathy and compassion develop in the first years of their lives, and parents play a very important role in nurturing these capacities. We hope this story about Bill and the injured bird, and the ensuing discussion of “compassion for animals”, will help you to fosteryour children'sempathy for animals and show them how totranslate that empathy into action. Have fun!
