Jewish tradition acknowledges that people undergo changes over the years, and describes common traits that characterize the different stages of one’s life: In our youth we learn and absorb, develop and change. As we mature, we are enriched with insight and wisdom.
Wisdom that comes with age is the product of all the experiences one has acquired throughout the years. Ruthi’s grandmother, who was herself once a daughter and a mother, surely experienced difficulties and challenges in her lifetime. She developed a set of ways to meet challenges and cope with hardships, and her rich experience allows her to propose a solution to Ruthi’s problem.
“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.” (Proverbs 17:6)
Like Ruthi and her grandmother, many grandchildren have a special relationship with their grandparents. The verse in Proverbs offers a lovely image of this relationship: The grandchildren are like a crown on the head of the adult, bringing him respect, joy and pleasure. At the same time, children and grandchildren are proud of their parents and grandparents, in their wisdom and through the example they set.
