By: Orna Landau & Nurit Cohen illustrations: Michal Diboa

Grandpa’s stories are very interesting. Grandpa grew up during Israel’s establishment and early years, a turbulent, exciting time when children took part in great and dramatic changes. Through Grandpa’s story, children can discover the story of Kibbutz Hanita, learn about the days that led up to Israel’s inception, and get a glimpse into the atmosphere in those historic days.

Kibbutz Hanita

Kibbutz Hanita was established in 1938 in the western Galilee, on the Lebanese border, as part of the Tower and Stockade settlements. It was isolated, and in late 1947, when the War of Independence broke out, it was disconnected from the rest of the Jewish state, and placed under siege. The risk posed to its inhabitants led to the decision to evacuate the children from the Kibbutz to Haifa. several months later, on the day Israel was established, the siege was broken, and Kibbutz Hanita became an integral part of the State of Israel. the kibbutz population currently amounts to 750, and has a museum on the history of the Kibbutz’ establishment, and the period in which it was incepted.
